Unmatched Performance
“Plastic Fusion was hired to test, repair, and replace existing pond liners on a restart project. The scope of work included installing a new insulated HDPE cover on the existing AD lagoon. Not only was the quality of the crew’s work exceptional, PFF was given the “A Team” award for outstanding work ethic.”

Mining Liner Installation for Leach Pads, Tailings & Process Water
Plastic Fusion Fabricators specializes in mining liner installation for heap leach pads, tailings ponds, process water containment, and stormwater control. A mining containment liner is the engineered geomembrane barrier that safely holds the harsh chemicals, process solutions, and tailings a mining operation produces — keeping them contained and out of the groundwater. We install HDPE and LLDPE liners, the materials the mining industry relies on for exposed, chemically aggressive, high-stress containment. With 40+ years of geomembrane installation across 24 states, Plastic Fusion is the installer mining operations call when containment has to meet regulatory requirements and hold under real conditions.
Mining containment is among the most demanding lining work there is. The liner has to resist concentrated process chemicals, take UV exposure and mechanical stress on exposed pads and ponds, conform to irregular subgrades and ground settlement, and stay intact for the life of the operation. Getting it right protects the operation, the environment, and the permit.
Mining Containment Applications
- Heap leach pads — containment for the chemical solutions (such as cyanide in gold recovery or sulfuric acid in copper) used to leach metal from ore
- Tailings ponds and dams — large-scale containment of the residual water and solids left after extraction
- Process water ponds — lined containment for process and recycle water
- Evaporation ponds — containment engineered for concentrated brines, including lithium and rare-earth processing
- Mine stormwater and runoff control — lined channels and ponds to capture and direct site water
- Secondary containment — protective barriers around mine storage tanks and chemical lines
Why HDPE Is the Mining Standard
HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is the industry standard for mining containment, and for good reason — it offers excellent UV resistance and high tensile strength for exposed applications like process water and tailings ponds, plus the chemical resistance to stand up to aggressive leach solutions. For subgrades that are irregular or prone to differential settlement, LLDPE provides higher flexibility and elongation to conform without stressing the liner. We match the material and thickness to the mining process and the chemistry it has to contain.
- HDPE — the mining standard: UV-resistant, high-strength, chemically resistant for exposed pads and ponds
- LLDPE — added flexibility and elongation for irregular subgrades and differential settlement
- RPP (reinforced polypropylene) — flexible chemical resistance where a project calls for it
We install the polyethylene-family materials the mining industry is built on. We do not use PVC for mining containment, where chemical and longevity demands favor HDPE and LLDPE.
Heap Leach Pads
Heap leach pads are unforgiving — they hold the chemical solutions that dissolve metal from ore, and a leak is both an environmental incident and a loss of valuable pregnant solution. We install leach pad liners engineered for the chemistry of the leach (cyanide, sulfuric acid, or other), fusion-welded into a continuous barrier and tested before the pad goes into service.
Tailings and Process Water Containment
Tailings ponds and process water ponds demand large-scale, durable containment that holds residual water and solids reliably over time. We fabricate and install the liner to the impoundment, weld every seam, and test the installation. For dedicated tailings pond containment, see our tailings page linked below.

Mining Liner FAQs
What is the best liner material for mining containment?
HDPE is the mining industry standard — it combines UV resistance, high tensile strength, and chemical resistance, which is what exposed heap leach pads, tailings ponds, and process water ponds require. LLDPE is used where the subgrade is irregular or settling, because its added flexibility lets it conform without stress. We select the material based on the mining process and the chemistry being contained.
Do you install heap leach pad liners?
Yes. We install heap leach pad liners engineered for the leach chemistry — gold (cyanide), copper (sulfuric acid), and other processes — fusion-welded into a continuous, tested barrier that contains the solution and protects the groundwater.
Can you line tailings and evaporation ponds?
Yes. We install liners for tailings ponds, process water ponds, and evaporation ponds, including containment engineered for concentrated brines in lithium and rare-earth processing.
